Question: Should my children be checked for subluxation?
Answer: Absolutely!!!!!!!!! The birthing process itself puts a tremendous amount of stress on the spine of a newborn child. These subluxations, if taken care of immediately, will prevent nerve interference that can hinder natural growth and health.
Question: Why is this taking so long?
Answer: Often times it takes a process of literally years of abuse and trauma to get your spine in the condition it is today. It will also be a process to retrain and stabilize your spine. Most patients wish to continue chiropractic care as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Question: What is that pop?
Answer: That “pop” is called joint cavitation. It is simply a release of nitrogen gas from the joints in our body. You may not hear a cavitation with every adjustment. The purpose of an adjustment is to restore normal motion to a joint, not to hear that “pop.”
Question: Doc, can you do something for my (symptom)?
Answer: WOW! What a common question. Chiropractors do not treat symptoms-----we treat subluxations. We often find that when the nervous system is balanced (subluxations are gone), symptoms improve.
Question: Can chiropractic get rid of my scoliosis?
Answer: Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. If detected and treated early enough, chiropractic can greatly reduce and often eliminate a scoliosis. This is why we stress the importance of having your children checked for scoliosis.
Question: Do you think I need back surgery?
Answer: Most back conditions can be treated effectively through natural chiropractic care. Any surgery has the potential for devastating side effects (including death), and should only be considered as a last resort.
Question: How long do I have to keep getting adjusted?
Answer: As long as you want to be healthy. It takes longer to become unhealthy than it does to get sick. (It is easier to go down a hill than it is to climb up it.)
Question: Should I be taking vitamins?
Answer: Only 1% of all people get their recommended daily allowance (R.D.A.) of vitamins and minerals from their diets.
Question: Doc, did I really slip my disc?
Answer: No, a disc does not “slip” out of position. It actually bulges or protrudes like a flat tire.
Question: Will exercise and stretching fix subluxations?
Answer: No, adjustments are very specific corrections of spinal misalignments. Stretching and exercise only address muscles and ligaments, not joints.
Question: What will happen if I stop using chiropractic?
Answer: The stress on the spine and nerves will go on as it did before you started treatment. Also, your body will not function as well as it could.
Question: Is it OK if I adjust my own neck?
Answer: NO! By trying to move the vertebrae yourself you will cause micro tears in the muscles supporting that area of the spine. This will lead to spinal instability and more complicated problems. The desire to adjust yourself is your body’s way of telling you that you have a subluxation. Subluxations should only be adjusted by your chiropractor.
Question: If I had back surgery, can I still be adjusted?
Answer: Yes, a good percentage of our practice is people who have had a failed back surgery.
Question: How do you know when you are sick?
Answer: Health is the general condition of the body and mind—it is not simply the absence of symptoms. We all know the tragic stories of people that are here one minute and the next they are gone.
Question: Can stress make you sick?
Answer: The body cannot tell the difference between chemical, physical, or emotional stress, but stress of any kind or combination lowers the immune system’s ability to protect us from sickness.
Question: Can an unhealthy spine affect the internal organs?
Answer: There exists a nearly 100% correlation between “minor” abnormal curves of the vertebrae and diseases of the internal organs.
Question: Why do I get sore sometimes after an adjustment?
Answer: When you come into our office for your first visit, your spine is in a position that your body has adapted to. Any time change is made to the body as with an adjustment, your body has to re-adapt. Change can sometimes cause discomfort. If you have ever begun a new workout routine, you can surely relate to this concept.
Question: My low back hurts, why are you adjusting my neck?
Answer: It is all relative, misalignment in one part of the spine puts abnormal stresses on all other areas of the spine.
Question: How long does it take to restore the curve in my neck?
Answer: It all depends…how long has it been there?
Question: You adjust me differently than my last chiropractor, does that matter?
Answer: No, absolutely not! There are many different adjusting techniques taught in chiropractic colleges, all of which have been extensively researched. Your doctor has chosen a specific technique that fits his or her preference.
Question: Do subluxations only occur in the spine?
Answer: No. A subluxation is a loss of motion or a misalignment of two adjacent bones. Any joint in the body can become subluxated.
Question: Can I still be adjusted if I have osteoporosis?
Answer: Of course! There are hundreds of chiropractic techniques, some of which deliver very low force of adjustments that are safe and effective.
Question: Should I stop using my medication?
Answer: Only your medical doctor can advise you on altering your medications, but frequently we find that patients who receive regular chiropractic care realize that they no longer need to take certain medications.
Question: My last chiropractor didn’t take x-rays, why did you?
Answer: Quite simply, we won’t take chances with your health. The only way to “see” the structure of your spine is with pictures. Anything else is guesswork.
Question: Why do you always check my legs before you adjust me?
Answer: By checking the length of your legs we can determine if your pelvis is out of balance. We will always re-check you legs before you leave to make sure we have corrected that imbalance.
